Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy

The Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy began after twelve editorial cartoons most of which depicted the Islamic prophet Muhammed, were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on 30Th September 2005. The newspaper announced that this publication was an attempt to contribute to the debate regarding criticism of Islam. In response, Danish Muslims held public protests. As the controversy grew, examples of the cartoons were reprinted in newspapers in more than fifty other countries, which led to violent as well as peaceful protests, including rioting particularly in the Muslim World.

Critics of the cartoons describe them as Islamophobic or racist . However Supporters of the cartoons claim they illustrate an important issue in a period of Islamic Terrorism and that their publication is a legitimate exercise of the right of free-speech.

The Hypodermic Needle Theory

The Hypodermic Needle Theory suggests that the media is like a syringe which injects ideas, attitudes, and beliefs into the audience.

As you can see the Danish Cartoons do inject ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience due to the fact that they are portraying all Muslims as terrorists when in fact it is just a minority. Therefore the Danish cartoons are following 'The Hypodermic Needle Theory',as they are giving out the belief system that all Muslims are extreme in their beliefs. This helps the public turn against Muslims causing an 'Islamophobic' feeling in the society that we live in.
